Active retirement: Our Volunteer Champion for 2018

Watch the video to see how this active volunteer puts her life philosophy into action.

Marcie Palmer has been volunteering all her life and continues the habit in her retirement.

"I believe we need to keep busy and use our brains," she says. "If we don't, it will be a very dull life."

This story is part of an ongoing educational series presented by the Good Samaritan Society focusing on the variety of ways seniors maintain active lifestyles.

Among Marcie's strategies for keeping busy is visiting her friends and neighbors at Good Samaritan Society — Las Cruces Village in New Mexico. She spends time every day with residents of her retirement community, whether they live on their own or have moved to the skilled care center.

Resident Terese Ortutay relies on those visits. "I am here alone," she says. "What would I do if I didn't have friends like Marcie to look after me? I'm thankful to God for friends like her."

Marcie was honored in 2018 as the Good Samaritan Society volunteer champion at the organization's annual banquet in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
