Donors serve up funding for memory care unit kitchen

Sister Bay, Wisc. – Kitchens are the heart of nearly every home. So when the kitchen in the Birchwood memory care unit at Good Samaritan – Scandia Village needed help, donors stepped forward.

“There are a variety of people who supported this project, including the Scandia Village Auxiliary,” said Michele Notz, administrator. “I want them to know how grateful we are for them.”

The remodeling project took three weeks to complete Donations funded the entire project.

The heart of a home

The memory care unit is home for 15 residents, and the kitchen is one of their favorite spots.

Heavy use had been wearing on the countertops, appliances, cabinets and flooring, Notz said. Storage was also an issue. A complete remodel was in order.

“People gather here,” Notz said. “It needs to be livable and homelike.” A comfortable setting can be calming to residents with memory loss, she explained.

Needs and donors meet

The staff who work in the memory care unit helped select finishes for the new space. When she could, Notz involved the people who live in the space too.

And when it was time, Scandia Village’s community of donors stepped in. “Good things happen for our residents when people give,” Notz said.

"Good things happen for our residents when people give," said Michele Notz, administrator.

A kitchen made to order

Today, the kitchen is set up so residents can observe the meal prep process. There is more space to work, higher countertops and new appliances. The flooring is new, and calming colors adorn the walls and workspaces.

It’s a whole new space.

“My staff were very impressed and appreciative of the finished project,” said Stephanie Lasnoski, director of nursing.

Feeling so loved and supported

Lasnoski would like the donors to know something else.

“It is very meaningful to know that we are so supported and loved by the community,” she said. “It literally brings tears to the eyes of our employees when they discover that there has been a new donation, treat, gift card or flowers given to the facility.

“It makes them proud to work for a place that is so loved and supported,” Lasnoski said.
