Walter Woods


Walter Woods has over 20 years of social development experience working both with and for young and 50+ people in America. Prior to joining the Good Samaritan Foundation, Walter served as Vice President – Strategic Programs for the AARP Foundation, a consultant to The World Bank Group, Chief Development Officer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington and Managing Director – Commercial Markets for the American Gas Association. Walter has published numerous marketing and sales articles including: “A Program for the 21st Century” for the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives magazine Executive Update, 10/’00.

Walter has a MBA from Northwestern University – J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Evanston, IL, 1989; BBA, cum laude, from Howard University, Washington, DC, 1987; and completed the Executive Program for Non-Profit Leaders from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, Palo Alto, California, 2013. He has been added to the 2001 Associations Advance America Honor Roll by ASAE for developing a program that “resulted in significant benefit to American society” and given a 2003 Award of Excellence by ASAE for developing a program that resulted in “significant benefit to American society."

Away from work, Walter enjoys fly-fishing, cross-country/downhill skiing, orienteering, sky diving and adventure travel.

Melinda Larson, CFRE

Director, Resource Development

Melinda graduated from the University of Sioux Falls in 1976 and then spent more than 20 years working for three different private universities in South Dakota and Oregon. Since coming to the Good Samaritan Society in January 1997, Melinda has served the Foundation as resource development consultant, planned giving consultant and campaign manager, in addition to serving in her current role as director of resource development.

Melinda enjoys travel, reading, vocal music and spending time with family and friends.

Larry Raad

Director, Major and Planned Gifts

For nearly 24 years, Larry has helped hundreds of individuals establish estate plans that accomplished their charitable goals. Larry is a CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) and has helped many individuals make current day major gifts of tax burdened property with creative gift planning strategies. In addition to helping individuals and their professionals with planning assistance, Larry presents gift and estate planning seminars all across the country. Larry's previous career experience includes serving as the controller for an industrial equipment distribution organization and later managing all aspects of the organization's business affairs.

Larry's faith is at the center of his personal and professional life. He has been in leadership positions in his church for more than 25 years and is excited to be a part of the mission of the Good Samaritan Society.

Theresa Wambach

Director, Grants and Research

Theresa has been with the Foundation since 2004. In addition to her current role as director of grants and research, she has served as a regional resource development consultant and grant writer. Theresa attended St. Cloud State University, where she obtained both a bachelor's (1985) and master's (1992) degree. She has spent the majority of her career working for not-for-profit organizations, including more than 14 years with faith-based organizations.

Theresa believes that giving to her community is an important part of her life of service to others.

Marylou Schnabel

Administrative Assistant

Marylou has been with the Foundation since March 1999. Prior to joining the Foundation, Marylou worked at the Good Samaritan Society – Sioux Falls Village for 15 years.

"Working for and caring for our residents is so rewarding, especially the one-on-one personal contact with the residents and their families," Marylou says. "At National Campus, I am able to provide support for many centers and staff members."

Alyce McKay

Manager, Millennium and Foundation Information

Alyce has been with the Foundation since August 1999. She attended South Dakota State University, Black Hills State University (B.A.) and the University of South Dakota (M.B.A.). Her experience includes service on the Rapid City, S.D., City Council (seven years) and the South Dakota State Legislature (six years) and teaching business and management information systems courses in higher education in South Dakota (17 years). Alyce is currently serving on the South Dakota Court Appointed Special Advocates Board of Directors.

Alyce likes to spend time with her extended family and friends, volunteering at church, cooking and traveling.

Leah Hebner

Associate Director, Resource Development

A native of South Dakota, Leah has worked in resource development since she graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. She also has master's degrees in philanthropy and development and English/creative writing. Before joining the Foundation, her career in fundraising included experience in the areas of social services and higher education.

Leah has a strong background in writing and planning/organization. She is passionate about responding to the resource development needs of the Good Samaritan Society centers she serves and working to enhance the lives of others.

When she's not at the National Campus, Leah likes to indulge in voracious reading, creative writing, mediocre knitting, bad golfing and spending time with her husband and son.

Amy Pokela

Associate Director, Resource Development

Amy comes to the Good Samaritan Foundation with a wealth of small shop fundraising experience. She has figured out many ways to work smarter, not harder to maximize resource development efforts. She has her MPA from the University of South Dakota and is privileged to teach an online course in fundraising for them during spring semesters.

Heather McClintock

Associate Director, Resource Development

Heather graduated from The University of South Dakota in May 2010 with a degree in advertising and public relations. In correlation with her studies, Heather was involved in philanthropic organizations on campus and completed internships with nationally known not-for-profit organizations.

Heather says that it has been a goal to work for an organization with a mission to reach out and better the lives of others. She says she's proud to be part of the Good Samaritan Society, an organization she admires and loves.

Mark Maturi

Associate Director, Major and Planned Gifts

A native of Wisconsin, Mark has worked in development since he graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Before joining the Good Samaritan Foundation, he was a fundraiser for non-profit organizations and higher education, most recently at the University of South Dakota.

Mark has a strong background in developing relationships and successful fundraising. He looks forward to raising the funds necessary to support the needs of the Good Samaritan Society centers he serves, and working to enhance the lives of residents.

Mark has always wanted to work for an organization that loves and cares for people. He is excited to be part of the Good Samaritan Society, an organization whose mission “is to share God’s love in word and deed by providing shelter and supportive services to older persons and others in need, believing that ‘In Christ’s Love, Everyone Is Someone’.”

When he’s not at National Campus or visiting a center, Mark likes to run, participate in intramural activities and spend time with family and friends.

Kim Burge

Associate Director, Major and Planned Gifts

Kim has been with the Society since 2000 and began her career in long-term care at the center level at the Good Samaritan Society – Valentine (Neb.). In Valentine, Kim worked in many areas, including marketing, resource development, community relations and activities. She enjoyed driving residents to their appointments and outings. While working at the center, Kim developed relationships and became passionate about the needs and interests of residents and staff. In making the decision to transfer to National Campus, Kim saw an opportunity to impact, change and continually improve facilities, amenities and opportunities for residents and staff through her work at the Foundation.

Good Samaritan Society founder August Hoeger started each day with the prayer, "God, what would you have me do today?" Kim says it gives her great joy to lift up the same prayer in stewarding for her family and friends, personally and professionally.

Theador A. Asay

Associate Director, Major and Planned Gifts

Ted has been with the Foundation since October 2005. He attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney and Trinity College before receiving a bachelor of science degree from Bellevue University in 1994. In his previous professional career, he was the owner of Asay Brothers Construction Company (1976–1981), The Interior (1978–1984) and a chain of Retail Art Galleries (1980–2005). Ted served as director of resource development at Good Samaritan Society – St. John’s from February to November 2004 and the Good Samaritan Society's Central Nebraska Cluster from November 2004 to October 2005.

Ted’s personal mission statement is, “To uphold faith, integrity and family while serving God and others in a manner that shows what real love is.” Ted is a certified pre-marital counselor and, along with his wife, Sylvia, he has sought to strengthen marriages and families though education, seminars and counseling sessions.

Juan C. Bustamante

Associate Director, Major and Planned Gifts

Juan has spent his entire career helping organizations build effective development programs. Juan joined the Foundation in June 2006. He has a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Illinois and has participated in post graduate studies in administration at U of I.

Juan’s career includes affiliations with The United Way of Chicago, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, SER Jobs for Progress and The International Latino Cultural Center.

Juan’s personal mission statement is: “To champion others to grow personally, professionally and spiritually by using my compassion and my belief in others' inherent goodness and awesome potential – the sky is not the limit.”

Jay Bethke

Manager, Grants

Jay Bethke joined the Good Samaritan Foundation in August 2010. He studied at the University of Malta, the University of Minnesota, Mankato (B.S., 2002), the University of South Dakota (M.A., 2006) and the University of San Francisco. His previous experience includes working for the Office of the Dean at USDSU (2003–2006) and as a grant administrator in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at San Francisco State University (2006–2010).

Jay says that he appreciates being part of something positive that is much bigger than himself, and he tries to be mindful of that in all aspects of his life and work.

Shawndra Shofner

Associate Director, Grants and Major Gifts

Shawndra holds an associate's degree from Bemidji State University and a bachelor's degree in liberal arts with a focus in public relations and communications from Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minn. She has more than 15 years of experience working, volunteering and fundraising for not-for-profit organizations. Prior to joining the Good Samaritan Foundation, she served the Good Samaritan Society – International Falls (Minn.) as its resource development and marketing director. She has also worked as a substitute teacher, written 20 nonfiction children's books and led numerous writing workshops for adults and children. Her volunteer leadership positions have included Friends of the Falls Public Library president, First Lutheran Church Council secretary, Bronco Swim Boosters vice president, Chamber of Commerce Retail Committee member and Good Samaritan Society – International Falls Advisory Board member.

Shawndra’s passion for the mission, vision and values of the Good Samaritan Society and her background has provided the perfect combination for her role as an associate director of grants and major gifts.

In her free time, Shawndra enjoys reading, writing, boating and spending time with her family.
